- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it foams.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with a towel for 60 minutes, until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
- Bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot.
- Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each into a rope. Shape into pretzels.
- Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
- Beat the egg and brush it over the pretzels.
- Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over pretzels.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Serve warm with icing or cream cheese frosting for dipping. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
