A simple and rewarding recipe for making delicious homemade white bread, perfect for sandwiches or toast.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 3 loaves 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups water, warm (95-110°F)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil or room temperature butter
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 8½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Grease three 8.5″ x 4.5″ bread pans with butter and set them aside.
  2. Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix well, then let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is frothy and bubbly.
  3. Add the oil, salt, eggs, and half of the flour into the yeast mixture. Mix on low using the dough hook until combined.
  4. Continue adding one cup of flour at a time, mixing on low speed until the dough pulls away from the sides and looks smooth. You may need up to 1/2 cup of additional flour. Knead on medium speed for about 3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover the dough with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size—about 30-45 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 3 even pieces. Sprinkle flour on your counter, then gently roll each loaf into a roughly 8″ x 12″ rectangle.
  7. Starting at the shorter end, roll each rectangle up tightly, pinch the seam to seal, and tuck the ends under. Place seam-side down into your greased pans.
  8. Whisk together the egg and water, then brush a thin, even layer over the tops of each loaf. Let them rise again until doubled in size, about 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Bake all three loaves for 28-30 minutes, until golden brown and an instant-read thermometer reads 195°F.
  10. Remove from the oven and brush melted butter over the top of each loaf. Let cool for about 10-15 minutes before removing from the pans and cooling completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, slice and freeze.
