Delicious and creamy Portuguese Custard Tarts with a crispy puff pastry shell, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of puff pastry
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Lemon peel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into circles to fit into a muffin tin.
  3. Place the pastry circles in the muffin tin and press them down gently.
  4. In a saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, cinnamon stick, and lemon peel over medium heat until hot, but not boiling.
  5. Whisk together the egg yolks and flour until smooth. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly.
  6. Strain the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring frequently.
  7. Fill the pastry shells with the custard mixture.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are golden and slightly caramelized.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally sprinkled with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
